Adult Holland Lop Size
The typical adult Holland Lop weighs between 2 and 4 pounds, with most bunnies settling between 3 and 3.5 pounds at maturity. According to the ARBA breed standard, the maximum show weight is 4 pounds for a senior Holland Lop. Anything heavier disqualifies a rabbit from the show table.
Body length runs approximately 10 to 12 inches from nose to base of tail. Ear length is around 3 to 4 inches, hanging beside the head rather than standing up.
Growth Stages
Birth to 8 Weeks
Holland Lop kits are born hairless and with their eyes closed. They weigh just an ounce or two at birth. Eyes open around day 10, and fur fills in over the first 2 to 3 weeks. By 8 weeks, when bunnies are typically ready to go to their new homes, they weigh around 1 to 1.5 pounds.
8 Weeks to 6 Months
This is the rapid growth phase. Your Holland Lop will gain weight steadily, with most of their height and length developing during this period. By 6 months, most Holland Lops have reached close to their adult size, weighing around 2.5 to 3.5 pounds.
6 Months to 1 Year
Growth slows significantly. Holland Lops “fill out” during this period, gaining bulk and muscle rather than length. Many continue to develop their adult head structure during this time, with the characteristic “pop” of the head shape occurring around 4 to 8 months.
1 Year and Beyond
By 12 months, most Holland Lops have reached their full adult size and weight. Some continue to fill out subtly through their second year, but major growth is complete.
True Dwarf vs False Dwarf
An important nuance in Holland Lop size: not all Holland Lops carry the dwarf gene the same way. A “true dwarf” Holland Lop carries one copy of the dwarf gene and one copy of the normal gene (Dwdw). True dwarfs are typically on the smaller side of the size range, around 2.5 to 3 pounds.
A “false dwarf” Holland Lop carries two copies of the normal gene (dwdw). They typically grow larger, often 3.5 to 4+ pounds, with slightly longer ears and a more pointed face shape. False dwarfs are still purebred Holland Lops, just genetically different. The difference is usually about a pound and primarily matters to show breeders.
There is no rabbit that is “double-dwarf” (DwDw). This combination is lethal and the kits do not survive past birth, which is why Holland Lop litters often have one or two stillborn kits.
