About the Harlequin Variety

Harlequin is one of the most distinctive and visually exciting patterns in the Holland Lop world. It features alternating bands or patches of two contrasting colors, most commonly black and orange (Black/Orange Harlequin or “BO Harlequin”), but also available in blue and fawn, chocolate and orange, and other combinations.

Harlequin is recognized under the ARBA Standard of Perfection in its own variety class. Each harlequin Holland Lop has a completely unique color distribution, as the genetics behind the pattern produce highly variable expression even within the same litter.

Some harlequin Holland Lops also carry the Vienna gene (VM), which adds white markings to the pattern and can produce blue-eyed white offspring. Show-quality harlequins feature balanced color distribution, ideally with the two colors alternating in clear bands across the face and body. The pattern can also vary from “extreme VM” (heavily white) to “low rufus” (less intense orange), each creating its own distinct visual appeal.
